September at a Glance: Income Tax Instalments and GST/HST

September is a good time for a quick check in on a couple of
upcoming tax dates particularly if you make individual income tax instalments or file GST/HST monthly.
There’s no need to make it complicated. A few minutes now can help you understand what’s coming up and keep your records on track.
“The goal isn’t to worry about every tax date. It’s simply to know which ones apply to you and stay a little ahead.”
September 15: Income Tax Instalments
For most individuals who are required to make income tax instalments in 2026, the CRA’s regular payment dates are March 15, June 15, September 15 and December 15.
That makes September 15, 2026 the next date on the calendar.
The CRA generally sends an instalment reminder in August to people it expects may need to make September and December payments. You can also view your instalment reminders through your CRA account.
A quick check might be as simple as asking:
Do I normally make income tax instalments?
Did I receive an instalment reminder from the CRA?
What amounts does the CRA show for September and December?
Has my income or tax situation changed significantly this year?
“If you received a CRA reminder, take a moment to read it now rather than putting it aside until September 15.”
A Note for Québec Residents
There is an important difference for Québec residents.
For 2026, the CRA's net-tax-owing threshold used in determining whether instalments may be required is more than $1,800 for Québec residents, compared with more than $3,000 for residents of other provinces and territories. Other conditions also apply when determining whether instalments are actually required.
This is one reason it’s worth checking your own situation rather than assuming the same rules apply to everyone.
September 30: Monthly GST/HST Filers
There’s another September date worth keeping on the radar.
If your business files GST/HST monthly and your reporting period ended August 31, your GST/HST return and any amount owing are generally due one month after the end of the reporting period — September 30.
September 15 and September 30 relate to different obligations, but the approach can be the same:
“Check the dates. Confirm what applies to you. Then get it off your list.”
